Empoli, which is now sitting in 12th place before a match at the San Siro, is aiming for a position in the upper section of the Serie A table while Inter Milan attempts to return to the top three for the first time this campaign.
Since Inter was in Saudi Arabia this week, Empoli may have a chance to win all three points despite their extensive journey.
The San Siro team travelled to Asia to meet with AC Milan, their fiercest opponents in the city.
Inter claimed another Supercoppa Italiana that day thanks to goals from Federico Dimarco and Edin Dzeko in the first half of their 3-0 victory. With a goal at the end of the game in Saudi Arabia, Lautaro Martinez won the trophy.
Since domestic play resumed after the World Cup, Inter has gone four games without losing at home. Thanks to another Edin Dzeko goal in a 1-0 win against
Napoli at the San Siro, Inter is the only side to defeat Napoli in Italy this season.
Then, Simeone Inzaghi’s team travelled to Monza, where they twice let opportunities slip.
With a 2-1 win over Parma, Inzaghi’s team moved on to the last eight of the Coppa Italia. With a 1-0 win over Hellas Verona, they stayed in fourth place in Serie A.
The Milan team is now just one point behind its neighbours in second place and ten points behind Napoli at the top of the standings.
The team is tied for third place with Juventus on points, but they are behind the Old Lady due to their extraordinary defensive record of 12 goals allowed. Inter has nevertheless scored the second-most goals in the league, after Napoli, with 38 in 18 games.
Empoli, on the other hand, has only played three games since the start of Serie A because they were in cup games for the last two weeks.
Empoli began their league season with two consecutive draws, one each against Udinese and Lazio. With a goal in the 92nd minute, they overcame a deficit to defeat the Rome team.
The team of Paolo Zanetti moved up to 12th place after beating Sampdoria 1-0, thereby ending any last-minute worries about being relegated.
